Foster Update

Just a quick update.

Flippy was adopted on Friday evening. However, the people are going RVing for a month with their daughter and her dog so we are keeping him until mid-December. But, the paperwork is all done and he is officially theirs - we are just watching him. Christine was nice enough to watch him over Thanksgiving for us so we don't have to take a bunch of dogs on a 5 hour car ride (our pet sitter only watches our personal dogs).

Mavis was adopted last night. She went to a home that had a deaf dog before. The home was great and we're so happy she found a home after only being with us three weeks. The earlier they are adopted the easier and less confusing it is for them.

Mavis

This is Mavis and she is our newest foster dog. She is an approximately 8 month old boxer puppy. She was found as a stray and ended up at the pound. We found her there and tested her hearing (since she is a white boxer) and she is completely deaf. The pound released her to us because they didn't want her to go to just anyone and knew that we would screen her new home. She is a real sweetheart and very smart. She has already learned signs for "sit", "no", "down" and "good girl".

Picture Taken By Andy

We're just a couple of fruits

Last weekend Andy and I went to Patterson Fruit Farm near Cleveland. We thought it would be fun because they were having hay rides and such. But, when we arrived, the price to get into that part of the farm had doubled from what they had on the website so we declined. We did however buy a mini pumpkin, some apple cider and walked through the apple-less orchard. Apparently they were done picking for the year. Oh well. We still made the best of it. Afterwards we drove through part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to take some pictures and have some ice cream. Good times.

Charley Barley

Here are a couple pictures of Charles taken last week. He is such as sweet and wonderful boy. He is, we think, a boxer/terrier mix. He has the wonderful personality of a boxer. Andy had him before he met me. Charley was six months old and at the pound about to be euthanized. He is now 6 years old.

What the heck is a Wooly Bear?

The short answer is that a Wooly Bear is a caterpillar with a myth that the length of its stripes determines the winter weather. It has become the star of a festival in Vermillion, Ohio for a few decades now. Yesterday Andy and I went to the Wooly Bear Festival to volunteer for Parrot Hope and Nikita's Wish. I hung out at the parrot table introducing macaws to some of the 100,000+ attendees while Andy took Lucy around with her donation jacket on to collect donations for Nikita's Wish. Lucy and Andy collected $140.00 in donations to help buy food and help pay for vet work for the foster animals in our rescue. I had a lot of fun hanging out with the macaws and other volunteers and talking to the public about parrot care and rescue.

This is a picture of some of the volunteers at the Wooly Bear. I'm in the background behind the table.
Great News for the Parrot Rescue!

I know this isn't very exciting for anyone else, but Angelin Chang (http://www.angelinchang.com) is going to do a benefit concert for the parrot rescue we volunteer for (www.parrothope.org)! It is going to be at a donated hall at Baldwin Wallace college in Berea, OH next May. The hall seats about 640 people and she apparently always sells out. Her tickets can start at $50/person. It is going to really be an amazing fundraiser for us! We are going to be that much closer to building the sanctuary!

The Birds

This is Roger. She is an approximately 11 year old Blue Crowned Conure, but could be older. This would mean she hatched in 1997. I adopted her in 2002 and she had at least five homes before me so we're not exactly sure about her age. Her last owner was told she was five years old. She is a sweet and opinionated girl who is very bonded to me. Her name was Roger when I got her and she already knew her name and says it when she wants attention - so after I had her sexed and she was a female I just stuck with that name.

This is Kelsey. She is a Senegal Parrot. She was hatched in 2003. She is a very sweet and playful girl. She is also mostly bonded to me, but will allow other people to handle her without issue. Originally she was supposed to be Andy's bird, but she bonded to me quickly. She is very smart and is learning some tricks!

Here is Sancha. She is an 11 year old Black Headed Caique who hatched in 1997. We got her from a family who could no longer keep her. The husband became allergic to the birds' dander and after two years of trying different medications they had to find new homes for their feathered friends. So, Sancha came to live with us. She is bonded to Andy and will only allow me to handle her if he is not around and even then sometimes she doesn't tolerate me. Its okay though, I'm glad Andy has a bird who is in love with him.

And last but not least, Sky. She is an Orange-Winged Amazon who, as you know was a foster bird of ours. From what the rescue could gather she is approximately 26 years old (hatched 1982). We don't believe she was wild caught, however it is very possible since the import ban wasn't put into place until 1992. Sky is doing much better now and is coming out of her cage without issue. I think she is falling in love with me, but she allows Andy to handle her. I wish he would interact with her more so she will be more comfortable going to more people than just me. It will help her build her confidence. We are still pondering her new name....

A couple random things.......

I have decided I want a better camera. I have wanted a digital SLR for a VERY long time now, but it has seemed more and more like a pressing matter these days. I think part of it is because I'm in this depressed manic mode where I want to buy random stuff all the time. The other part is because I have been on Flickr a lot lately and everyone else's pictures make me extremely jealous because of the quality. Now, I know that having a DSLR will not instantly make me a wonderful photographer, but it will increase the quality of shots that I, with my abilities, am able to take. But, with money always being an issue for us, this is a pipe dream for now. We all need something to pine for, right?
I also want to rename our parrot Sky. I don't like her name and never really have. Andy suggested a spanish or portuguese name since orange-wing amazons are native to South America. I like this idea and have been searching somewhat dilligently online to find her a new name. Here are a few we have found and at least liked a little:

Alta
Izzy
Pilar
Zarita
Filipa
Fina
Loca
Inca
Loro (means parrot)

I'm not really sold on any of those quite yet. If anyone else actually ever reads this, I would take suggestions.

The longest absence...

Well. Here I am. Not that anyone was waiting for me to come back. Andy mentioned tonight that I hadn't written anything in months on my blog so I decided to give an update. Again, not that anyone reads it. Also my friend Christine started her own blog and maybe that will inspire me to write more? Probably not, but it is a nice thought. Here is her blog: http://gibbonszoo.blogspot.com/

So, what has been happening?

Well, first off, the bird in the last post is no longer a foster bird. We're pretty sure at this point that she is a permanent resident here. She has had a hard life and even though we may not be the most wonderful home in the world (while we do do our best) I think that what she really needs is stability. Plus, she is slowly coming around and gets more and more excited about coming out of her cage everyday - as opposed to being happy to sit and rot in her cage the rest of her life.

I work at a dog daycare now. It has its drama with a kind of crazy owner, but I like it pretty well. I really can't complain too much since I get paid to play with dogs - not a bad gig.

In a big upset Andy and I started eating meat again after two years of not doing so. I'm not sure what happened. I'm also not sure that I will keep eating meat. I feel forever guilty about it and often-times choose to have a meatless meal. We'll see how that all goes.

For financial reasons I took this fall semester off. I also think I kind of needed a break anyways. For the past two years I have been going to school all year round - so it will be nice to have some time off.

We currently have three foster dogs - all of which came from the same pound and were about to be gassed. One of them is a handful and has dominance (not aggression) issues and issues with marking in the house. We're working with the dominance and the marking problem will get much better once he is neutered.

How can we have three foster dogs? Well, our limit is really two, but it has been a little easier to have three because Andy built us a fence!! Finally, for the first time in my life, I live in a house with a fenced in backyard. It isn't a pretty fence but it works and that is all I care about. We bought the supplies to make it at Tractor Supply and the materials for the fence cost about $250.00 - not too shabby! We got the idea from this website called Unchain Your Dog which helps get dogs off of chains and at least into a fence and hopefully into a home! Their website is: http://www.unchainyourdog.org/

Alright, that is all I can think of and I'm really tired. Night.

Grandma

My grandma, Alma, died today. She was 93 years old. My grandma was the most wonderful and kindest person I've ever known. She never had a bad thing to say about anyone - even when there was a lot of bad that could be said. Everyone who met her loved her and some adopted her as their grandma which only added to her 70-some grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a good christian for 80 years of her life. I know she is now in heaven where she has no more pain. She is now with all of those who have gone before. I love you grandma. I can't wait to see you again someday.

I take great comfort in the words spoken in 1 Thess. 4:13-18

13But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Enjoyable

I found this posted on craigslist. I found it rather enjoyable.

This is appropriate for the number of people who keep putting their dogs up for adoption when they find out they are going to have kids.....

After two long years of being on a waiting list for an agility dog, we have been notified by the breeder that, at long last, our number has come up and ... WE ARE HAVING A PUPPY!!!

We must get rid of our children IMMEDIATELY because we just know how time consuming our new little puppy is going to be and it just wouldn't be fair to the children. Since our little puppy will be arriving on Monday we MUST place the children into rescue this weekend!

The kids are described as:

One male - His name is Tommy, Caucasian (English/Irish mix), light blonde hair, blue eyes. Four years old. Excellent disposition. He doesn't bite. Temperament tested. Does have problems with peeing directly in the toilet. Has had chicken Pox and is current on all shots. Tonsils have already been removed. Tommy eats everything, is very clean, house trained & gets along well with others. Does not run with scissors and with a little training he should be able to read soon.

One female - Her name is Lexie, Caucasian (English/Irish mix), strawberry blonde hair, green eyes quite freckled. Two years old. Can be surly at times. Non-biter, thumb sucker. Has been temperament tested but needs a little attitude adjusting occasionally. She is current on all shots, tonsils out, and is very healthy & can be affectionate. Gets along well with other little girls & little boys but does not like to share her toys and therefore would do best in a one child household. She is a very quick learner and is currently working on her house training-shouldn't take long at all.

We really do LOVE our children so much and want to do what's right for them; that is why we contacted a rescue group. But we simply can no longer keep them. Also, we are afraid that they may hurt our new puppy.

I hope you understand that ours is a UNIQUE situation and we have a real emergency here!!! They MUST be placed into your rescue by Sunday night at the latest or we will be forced to drop them off at the orphanage or along some dark, country road. Our priority now has to be our new puppy.

We have a new foster ferret named Ophelia. A person found her in their backyard when their dogs went after her. She has a nipping problem, but we're working on that. She has already generated some interest on petfinder so we're hopeful that she will find her new forever home soon. She is a cutie.

No more work!

Well. I'm not exactly out of the woods yet. We are going to Gatlinburg with my parents for a week and when we get back I will only have a few weeks of work left. I'm really excited about being and student only and not working and going to school at the same time. I feel like I'm going to be able to do so much more. I'll be able to do more schoolwork but I also will be getting us ready for our trip.

Usually Andy does the getting ready since he has a pretty flexible schedule but this time I have three days off before we leave. So, I'll be cleaning the house, washing clothes and getting us packed. Andy has agreed to clean the car (which is in much need of cleaning).

Not a lot else is going on.
